TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - A doctor accused of distributing opioids illegally to patients and health care fraud will spend the next five years in prison after he was sentenced Thursday.

Dr. William Bauer, of Port Clinton, was found guilty in US District Court in July of 76 charges of distribution of a controlled substance and an additional 25 counts of health care fraud stemming from accusations that he distributed opioids to patients “outside the usual course” and not for “legitimate medical purpose.”

Those 101 counts were lessened from a much larger earlier indictment, but more than 100 of those charges were dropped by federal prosecutors in June of this year.

According to the US Attorney’s office, Bauer “Bauer prescribed high doses of opioids and other controlled substances to patients without regard to any improvement in pain level, function, or quality of life; prescribed dangerous drug combinations; failed to consider a patient’s state of addiction and ignored warning signs of abuse and diversion such as patient family members stealing medications, patients frequently requesting early refills, patients losing medications and other actions.”

Bauer was also accused of administering procedures that “failed to meet certain procedural requirements.” Prosecutors say he then fraudulently billed insurance.
