Nationwide Children’s Hospital will acquire Mercy Health-Children’s Hospital
The two hospitals have had a formal partnership since the start of 2020.
TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - A big shake up our area’s hospital systems.
Mercy Health’s Children’s Hospital in downtown Toledo will be handing over its operation to Nationwide Children’s Hospital based of Columbus. This comes after a new partnership between the two.
Mercy Health administrators saying Thursday that the biggest perk for Northwest Ohio will be that very specialized care for kids that you won’t have to go to Columbus or Ann Arbor for.
Mercy Health Children’s Hospital will be getting new owners and operators in the form of Nationwide Children’s Hospital. The Columbus based children’s hospital acquiring the facility in a new deal, expanding on their partnership started just this year.
“We reached out to nationwide and had really a conversation and saw people who share our values and would be committed to doing things we think are important in the community,” said Bob Baxter, President of Mercy Health-Toledo.
Nationwide leaders say there are no immediate plan to physically expand beyond Cherry Street but that they’re open to whatever comes up in the future. The first goal is localized children’s services.
“We believe that children in the Toledo region are best served by local providers and served in the Toledo community. It’s just better for children and their families to receive care close to home,” said Rick Miller, CEO of Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
The exact specialties and subspecialties coming to Toledo are not being laid out yet but Nationwide officials say things like transplants may still require a trip to Columbus. Ultimately, though, it’s hoped the Nationwide name will draw physicians and bring new services to Toledo.
“Any number of specialties will be trying to help recruit. Recruiting a physician often translate into immediate growth and access to care,” said Miller.
“I think the ability to get more complex care here locally is the real measure of value attached to this,” said Baxter.
Neither side would get into the specific financial sides of the deal. This acquisition will take a while so the whole process is expected to be finished by January of 2022.
